Overview

Halton Community Trust is undertaking a facilities optimisation project to modernise and enhance the operational efficiency, safety, and long-term sustainability of its garage and office premises. High resolution point cloud scans of the site have already been completed by Liverpool John Moores University Civil Engineering Department using a Trimble point-cloud scanning system.

We are seeking a motivated individual to take these raw scan datasets forward developing them into accurate 3D digital models, creating engineering-grade CAD outputs, and supporting the Trust in using these digital assets to plan and de-risk future capital investment decisions.

This is ideal for someone with interest or experience in digital modelling, CAD workflows, spatial design, and the use of digital twins to drive operational improvement in real-world environments.

Duties and responsibilities
Key Responsibilities

Point Cloud Processing & 3D Model Development

  • Import and process Trimble-generated point-cloud data (e.g., *.las, *.rcp, .e57) into appropriate modelling platforms.
  • Clean, align, segment, and classify point-cloud datasets to prepare for modelling workflows.
  • Develop an accurate 3D model of the garage and office areas, including:
    • Structural features (walls, floors, ceilings)
    • Vehicle bays and workshop areas
    • Utilities, access routes, and storage zones
  • Ensure model accuracy suitable for engineering design and spatial planning.

Ensure model accuracy suitable for engineering design and spatial planning.

  • Produce AutoCAD-compatible files (*.dwg, .dxf) and associated documentation.
  • Generate 2D layouts, elevations, and cross‑sections based on the developed 3D model.
  • Ensure outputs meet professional drawing standards for use in future planning and engineering assessments.

Digital Twin Development

Assist in creating a digital twin of the facility to simulate:

  • Workflow efficiency
  • Space utilisation
  • Operational bottlenecks

Enable scenario testing for different workshop configurations.

Spatial Layout Analysis & Optimisation

Work directly with Halton Community Trust staff to understand current operations, equipment usage patterns, and future needs.

Use the digital model to explore layout alternatives that:

  • Improve workflow and accessibility
  • Enhance safety and compliance
  • Optimise available space for current and future operations

Provide recommendations supported by spatial analysis and visualisation.

Capital Investment Scenario Simulation

Support de-risking decisions around new equipment procurement, including:

  • Additional 2-post or 4-post vehicle lifts
  • Diagnostic equipment
  • Storage or tooling areas

Simulate installation options, clearances, and safe working envelopes within the digital twin environment.

Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Prepare clear reports and visual outputs to communicate findings to stakeholders.
  • Present model iterations and optimisation scenarios to Halton Community Trust leadership.
  • Document methodologies and data sources to ensure reproducibility and handover of the digital model.

Learning Opportunities

This offers hands‑on experience with:

  • Real-world point-cloud data processing
  • Professional CAD workflows
  • Digital twin creation in a live operational setting
  • Collaboration with community partners
  • Contribution to a capital improvement project with tangible impact

Skills and experience

Desirable:

Experience working directly with point-cloud datasets (e.g., *.las, *.e57, .rcp).

Knowledge of digital twin platforms or simulation environments.

Experience using Autodesk ReCap, Revit, or similar BIM tools.

Understanding of workshop equipment (e.g., vehicle lifts, diagnostic bays) or industrial layout planning

Experience

Some relevant work experience (placement, internship, or part-time technical work) in engineering, CAD, surveying, digital modelling, or a related technical environment

Experience working on academic or project-based 3D modelling tasks.

Desirable:

Prior involvement in a facilities, spatial design, digital engineering, or optimisation project.

Experience collaborating with external partners or community organisations.

Knowledge of health & safety considerations in workshop or industrial environment
