Discovery Internship - Grad Edition: AI Developer Intern (Viz Box Ltd)

This internship will sit within Viz Box Ltd, a health technology company developing digital tools for stroke and neurological rehabilitation, including the Skyla NR™ virtual reality upper-limb rehab platform and emerging AI-enabled support tools. The intern will work closely with the founder and collaborators across product, research, and business development, helping to explore how AI technologies can support stroke survivors, therapists, and partners, and how these tools can be communicated and positioned for NHS and community use.
Duties and responsibilities
Main duties and purpose of the
- Support research into how AI and digital tools are currently used in stroke and neurorehabilitation, summarising key opportunities and best practices for Viz Box to build on.
- Help map and design potential AI-supported user journeys for stroke survivors, carers, and clinicians (e.g. digital assistant ideas, personalised feedback, business intelligence for service providers).
- Contribute to the preparation of product and business development materials (presentations, one-pagers, diagrams) explaining Skyla NR™, future AI tools, and their value for NHS, charities, and community partners.
- Assist with simple prototypes or conceptual mock-ups (e.g. user flow diagrams, interface sketches) to support internal discussions and stakeholder engagement.
- Provide general project support such as organising information, documenting processes, and contributing to funding or partnership documentation where relevant.
The is based within a small, mission-driven team focused on stroke rehabilitation and community support, working closely alongside the linked social enterprise Visual Therapies CIC, which is setting up stroke support spaces and user groups that inform digital product development. This gives the intern exposure to both a commercial health-tech environment (Viz Box Ltd)and a community-focused CIC (Visual Therapies), with opportunities to see how user feedback shapes digital health tools in practice
Skills and experience
This is designed to be suitable for Liverpool John Moores University students at an undergraduate level, with responsibilities and expectations aligned to their stage of study.
Subject knowledge
- Interest in health, rehabilitation, psychology, or neuroscience (for example stroke, neurodiversity, or long-term conditions),gained through LJMU modules, projects, or independent learning.
- Curiosity about digital health and emerging technologies such as apps, VR, or AI in healthcare, even if experience is primarily theoretical at this stage.
- Basic awareness of how research, user feedback, or service design can be used to improve products and services.
- Relevant degree programmes at LJMU could include (but are not limited to):Psychology, Health Psychology, Neuroscience, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Public Health.
- Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Computing, Digital Media, Interaction Design.
- Business Management, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, or related programmes with an interest in health technology.
Key skills
Written and verbal communication – able to communicate clearly in emails, short reports, and presentations to a range of audiences (clinicians, business partners, stroke survivors).
Research and synthesis – confident using online sources, academic databases, or grey literature to find information and summarise it into clear, structured outputs.
Problem-solving and creative thinking – willing to explore how AI and digital tools could practically support stroke rehabilitation and business development, and to suggest user-centred ideas.
Organisation and attention to detail – able to manage notes, documents, and small tasks reliably alongside university-level study expectations.
Teamworking and professionalism – comfortable working with a small team and external partners, responding to feedback, and managing time effectively around agreed project goals.
Experience (appropriate for LJMU undergraduates)Experience from LJMU coursework, group projects, dissertations in progress, or placements that demonstrates the ability to research a topic and present findings (written or verbal).
Any experience using digital tools (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, basic design tools, simple coding or data work, or virtual learning environments) will be considered valuable and can be developed further in the .
