The university's climate action plan outlines steps to achieve net zero by 2035, with the Faculty of Health innovation, Technology and Science, playing a crucial in this effort. Research from 2021 indicates that laboratories consume five to ten times more energy than equivalent-sized offices. Therefore, implementing sustainable practices within the faculty's laboratories is essential to meet the university's 2035 targets. To evaluate our laboratory practices, the university has invested in the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF), developed by UCL, which is already being used by over 95 institutions. This project aims to reduce the environmental impact of practical activities that heavily rely on single-use plastics, energy and water. The data collected will inform new methods for teaching and research, thereby reducing the faculty's carbon footprint. We aim to educate both staff and students on their potential impact on the university's carbon footprint and how they can contribute to reducing it. The will involve reviewing the criteria for the Silver accreditation and supporting the sustainability team in the development of campus decarbonisation initiatives.

Duties and responsibilities

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

Review the requirements for the LEAF Silver accreditation.

Assess the laboratories across different areas of the faculty to see where reasonable changes can be made.

Determine what equipment and consumables have the biggest carbon output and how we can reduce their impact.

Collate and analyse results.

Conduct practicals to understand the workflow from preparation to disposal.

Health and Safety:

Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation.

Maintain awareness of safe lab practices.

Ensure understanding of COSHH and risk assessments relevant to daily tasks and duties.

Maintain awareness and understanding of local health and safety policies and procedures.

Skills and experience

Qualifications

A-levels in science or similar qualifications

Experience:

Attended undergraduate practical classes in science based degree programme.

Have some knowledge about the impact of waste, energy and water on the environment.

Familiar with health and safety legislation and its implementation

Ability to process data and experience in using MS Office suites.

Excellent Time management.

Willingness to learn
